Come explore expert-led stations with fun activiti Come explore expert-led stations with fun activities for all ages at Nature Days this Saturday, August 6th, 3-5pm at the Parade Grounds!

🌾 Start at The John Thatcher Native Garden next to the movie theater, where you can enjoy face painting while learning about invasive plants and how to control them from Dianne Crary.

🐍 Move into the Parade Grounds, where you will delight in seeing live animals from the @dpnaturectr.

🌊 Check out the marine debris station organized by FIConservancy Marine Debris Coordinator, @klimette62, where you'll marvel at unique displays and can join in “fishing” games and creating a balloon “ocean creature” with @nathaniel.artwork.

🍦Make sure to grab a free frozen treat from the ice cream truck to cool off!

🎥 Finally, pop into the @fitheater to see a looping short film, featuring Michele Klimczak, about fishing lures created (and used!) from marine debris by artist and former @tothelighthouseworks fellow, @dukerileystudio.

See you Saturday!

Sea salp szn 🎐 If you’ve been to the beach r Sea salp szn 🎐

If you’ve been to the beach recently, you probably noticed the abundance of sea salps which, contrary to what you might think, are not jellyfish.

These fascinating creatures are barrel-shaped, planktic tunicates and are considered one of the most evolved of all marine invertebrates. Salps glide around the ocean by jet propulsion, sucking in water from a siphon on one end and spitting it back though another. The salp strains the pumped water through its internal feeding filters, feeding on phytoplankton. They have a kind of primitive backbone (which jellies lack), and the black dots you see are their digestive system.

The appearance of salps on beaches usually corresponds to a phytoplantkton bloom in the sea. When food is plentiful, salps can quickly bud off clones, which graze on the phytoplankton and can grow at a rate which is probably faster than that of any other multicellular animal, quickly stripping the phytoplankton from the sea.

Each salp starts life as a female, then switches to male and never switches back. It swims alone for part of its life, then spends the rest of it with other salps, linked together in chains arranged as wheels, lines or other designs. If these chains break, they don’t link back together. Each salp lives only a few days or a month in two stages: solitary, and in a colonial chain. A solitary salp gives rise to a colony of genetically identical salps asexually. The salps are connected in a chain that starts as a coil around the solitary salp’s gut. It grows over time and eventually breaks free.

P.S. They are completely harmless to humans.

We are grateful to everyone who attended and suppo We are grateful to everyone who attended and supported our Sunset on the Beach event! The rain we needed passed just in time to enjoy the beautiful Fishers Island Club beach with a spectacular spread thanks to Dave, Chef Ben, Nici and team. The highlight was honoring two people who have given so much to the island, Ellie Kelly and Carol Giles (read more about them at link in bio). We admired and auctioned off art by @todd06390 @livrad, and marveled at @klimet62’s maze of found footwear at the entrance to the Beach Club. It was a great pleasure to celebrate the work we are doing together to conserve and protect Fishers Island’s natural environment. Your generosity and enthusiasm make our mission possible. Thank you.

We’re thrilled to honor two outstanding women, E We’re thrilled to honor two outstanding women, Ellen “Ellie” H. Kelly and Carol Giles, at Sunset on the Beach this Saturday.

Mrs. Kelly, the second president of FIConservancy, has dedicated her life to environmental causes both on and off Fishers Island. Carol Giles, who retired in June after 33 years as science teacher at Fishers Island School, has motivated countless students to become thoughtful and creative problem solvers in the field of science. Learn about our honorees at the link in our bio. We’re looking forward to celebrating Ellie and Carol with you this weekend!

Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to bid on the two artworks shown in this picture: @todd06390’s spectacular winning photograph from our 2021 photo contest and @livrad’s incredibly creative driftwood pelican piece.

See you Saturday at the the Big Club Beach!

Last summer, dozens of Islanders joined in our beach cleanup efforts, contributing to THOUSANDS of pounds of marine debris being cleared from Fishers Island's shores.

@klimette62 has the monumental task of clearing this pollution year-round to help conserve our Island and protect our wildlife and community. But there's still more shoreline to cover and more debris to collect. We need your help! Learn more and join us at 🔗 in bio or visit ficonservancy.org.

See you on the beach!

P.S. The three teams that collect the most marine debris throughout the summer will receive prizes!

Which came first, the turtle or the egg? 🐢🥚 Which came first, the turtle or the egg? 🐢🥚

Female turtles lay their eggs on land, typically in June/July. This snapping turtle was spotted at “Windex” and likely journeyed across the road and up the hill from Barlow Pond. As you can see in these photos, she dug a number of holes. They often do, sometimes abandoning a hole because of obstacles like rocks and tree roots, or some think extra holes or “false nests” might serve as diversions for predators. After laying their eggs, the turtle covers the nest with dirt and departs. Hatching takes about 80-90 days, but can vary depending on temperature and other environmental conditions. Stay tuned!

Horseshoe crab flip & rescue! FUN FACTS: horseshoe Horseshoe crab flip & rescue! FUN FACTS: horseshoe crabs…

…are not actually crabs. They’re arachnids, a class of arthropods with scorpions and spiders. 🦂

…have been roaming the earth for ~450 million years, pre-dinosaurs. 🦖

…swim upside down. 🙃

…can go a year without eating and can endure extreme temperatures and salinity. 🥵

…have two copper atoms in their blood, which cause it to be blue. 💦

…are used by to detect harmful endotoxins in every shot, vaccine, IV drip and implanted medical device destined to go inside the human body. Drug companies drain 30% of their blue blood for a clotting agent used to make a liquid called Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL). A synthetic version is in development but not yet approved in the US. 💉

…die at a rate of up to 30% after blood harvesting. Most are returned to the ocean, although scientists surmise that some companies likely sell them as fishing bait instead. ☠️

Sorry to burst your bubble, but balloons are harmf Sorry to burst your bubble, but balloons are harmful to the environment. Wildlife, like birds and marine creatures, can mistake balloon debris for food and get entangled in ribbons.

From graduations to weddings and holidays, there are lots of festive celebrations this time of year! Let’s try to use more eco-friendly options and, at the very least, make sure to properly secure and dispose of balloons. 🎈🎈🎈

It’s #worldbirdmigrationday and we’re ecstatic It’s #worldbirdmigrationday and we’re ecstatic to share our annual spring bird count results with you. Thanks to our expert, Dr. Adam Mitchell, and everyone who joined us.

5.8.2022 was a great day for birding! While the predicted overall migration rate for birds this spring was low, we observed 52 species during our count and 58 species over the course of the weekend – significantly higher numbers than usual. “The late spring, compounded by cold and windy weather, kept many of our overwintering and migrant birds on the Island,” said Dr. Mitchell. “Of note was the unusual amount of brown-headed cowbirds in the mix.”

Read more about the count and see the full list of species spotted at link in bio.

Lost and found! Last week, @klimette62 came across Lost and found! Last week, @klimette62 came across this “no wake” buoy washed up on our shoreline and thought it may be too heavy to move. She shared a photo of it on Facebook and soon after, two people reached out identifying it as @ct.deep’s buoy that went missing from the Mystic River last fall. Yesterday, their team was able to retrieve their lost buoy (swipe to see)! Thanks to everyone who helped get this buoy back where it belongs.
